Just the other night I thought about hosting a hotspot that looks and acts just like how it is at many public places like airports and hotels, at home. It’s actually quite a good idea for apartments actually: why open multiple accounts with ISP when you know you can just all share a connection? This is especially useful for cases where there is no imposed bandwidth cap, and for those who aren’t exactly heavy users. Bottomline: why spend $50/month for a connection that you barely use to its full potential? Why not just pool those resources together and share one connection among multiple “apartment-holds”?

Marketing aside, what are the technology needed to build a simple, free, home hotspot that has user authentication functionality? Essentially, one will need a wireless router, and a captive portal. If you can combine these two together then it’ll make things that much more simpler. Well, many people already did the hard work, you just need to pick your weapon of choice, and Coova is just one of those many choices.

I have not tried setting one up myself, but if I have the chance, I’ll definitely give Coova a try first before anything else. If you are in the same boat, check it out for yourself.

I recently had the “pleasure” upgrading one of my system drive to a SSD, due to the fact that my now ex-system drive was an almost decade-old 160GB WD drive that has been showing its age for quite some time. As a result, this upgrade took place sooner than later, and it is, as many people agree, probably the most satisfying upgrade you can do to a computer.

Essentially, the SSD made me the slowest component in my computer’s operations. No longer do I have to wait minutes for the computer to boot up; gone is the application start-up time; say goodbye to thumb twiddling while waiting for the loading screens.

While there are still many factors affecting a system’s performance, a SSD upgrade is probably by far the most rewarding upgrade one can do to a computer, and the users can feel it too. Sure, it would not suddenly make an old machine calculate floating points faster, nor would it allow you to pay Crysis on a 10 years old Intel graphics laptop, but instead, you get what you always expected from a computer: you click for a program to start, and it opens in seconds instead of minutes.

Was it pricey? Yes. Was it worth it? Definitely.

I believe everyone can perform quite a few maintenance on their vehicle if they are willing to learn how, because in reality, most maintenance procedure is pretty simple.

How do you change engine oil? Drain old oil, dump new oil. How do you change transmission fluid? The simple way, is just like engine oil. The same goes to many other fluids that run in your car, like the coolant and power steering fluid, and that, my friend, pretty much handle a majority of the maintenance that’s done on one’s car over the course of the car’s life.

And the benefit of doing it all by yourself? Not only you save money, you also learn more about your vehicle along the ride. Why rely on someone else to do the work when you know you can do it just as good, if not better?

From a hobby photographer’s perspective, I think it’s very important to respect other photographers’ work space, especially when many photographers are present for a small group photoshoot. If one photographer is already taking pictures of people, respect him/her as the primary photographer for that session and work around him/her. If you need better angle and need the photographer to move, ask when s/he is taking a break.

A little more respect for other people goes a long way. A very long way.

It is so important that one evaluates his/her situation before deciding on getting a pet, because it’s not just the money part that matters, but also the time and effort one needs to put in to provide the psychological and physical needs of the pet.

And as much as I believe owning a pet really helps people grow, it is also a decision that people need to evaluate critically.
