T-Mo & ATT use GSM, and Verizon uses CDMA. Different communication technology, so is the application and ubiquity.
For me, knowing that GSM is used at more places worldwide, choosing GSM over CDMA is a fairly easy decision. See, many places in Europe and Asia all use GSM technology, so people who use GSM phones can simply bring their "unlocked" phones to another country, get a SIM card there and talk away.
But it doesn't stop there.
