I didn’t visualize this in my mind when I took the three exposures, but by merging 2 exposures rather than 3 into a HDR image, I got this.
Makes sense, though, because the +1 that shows most of the detail in the shadowed area is in the formula, and as a result, those areas stayed in the shadow, which is exactly what I wanted when I said “I want a silhouette shot”.
